ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE, EXPLAINED

Xero vs Reckon.

A small business comparing Xero and Reckon One should start with an ordinary working month. How many invoices, people, bank accounts and connected systems need attention? That is the basis for a useful shortlist.

Compare the essentials
WHERE TO START

Keep the comparison close to your needs.

Choose a plan around the work you actually perform and the help you can access. If your current file is in another Reckon product, identify that first so the comparison includes the cost and scope of conversion.

Do not pay for complexity you will not use

Separate essential tasks from possible future needs. Ask each provider to price the smallest setup that handles today’s work, then price a realistic growth scenario. Keep optional tools visible in the quote so you can decide whether they save enough time to justify the expense.

Look beyond a successful first import

Run a complete period of bank matching, supplier payments and customer receipts in a trial. Investigate how duplicate entries are found and corrected. If several people work in the file, agree who reviews unreconciled items and how questions reach the owner.

Check support for the way you trade

For businesses with an online shop, job system or specialist reporting, confirm the exact connection and data required. Ask your bookkeeper to describe the manual work that would remain in each setup. A lower subscription is less useful if it adds a recurring task nobody has time to own.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Your questions, answered.

Is Reckon always cheaper than Xero?

A fair quote compares the plans and additional services needed for the same workload. Promotions, billing periods and payroll requirements can change the total, so check current provider pricing.

Do I need to move every historical transaction?

Agree the required history with your bookkeeper before migration. Compare a full-history conversion with opening balances and retained access to the old records, including the cost and reporting consequences of each.
